Social and Cultural Dynamics

Papua has not been isolated since 2017.

Some say Papua has been one of the most isolated cultures in the world. It is not true. Connections on the road unlocked access to many isolated areas in the Papua region, which has not been thinkable previously. There is the Trans-Papua Highway refers to 12 road segments, stretch from Sorong, Papua Barat Daya Province to Merauke, Papua Province, with a total length of 4,325 km (2,687 mi). The armed wing of the Free Papua Movement vetoed the road construction, saying that it is cast-off for military purposes.

It cannot be denied that the road brings benefits to native Papuans in terms of the availability of goods and access to healthcare facilities. As we know, there are a total of 200 health care facilities in Papua as of September 24, 2023. However, the road also has potentially destructive consequences, such as opening the way for illegal logging and possibly escalating contacts between several tribes that could lead to tribal conflicts. Papua, with a population of just 4,3 million (Census on September 2020) and a population density of 3,51 people per square km, will enjoy the roads.
